Several determining factors were taken into consideration when it came to our editor’s choice in elliptical trainers. Here we’ll go over those features further along with reviews on Schwinn 431 elliptical trainer by actual users who have tried it. Our aim is to provide more information on the products we’ve selected and featured in our buying guide to help you in your buying decision.
This elliptical trainer would be well suited for those where space is a concern. It has a nice compact design and yet still delivers adequate stride length for a comfortable workout. This made our editor’s pick for quality, performance, and value.
The Schwinn 431 received positive reviews by the Treadmill Doctor and consumer research. It is put out by Nautilus which also manufactures Bowflex and Stairmaster products.
The Schwinn 431 offers a variety of features that make it a great choice for the average fitness-minded person. It includes multiple workout programs with 16 levels of resistance. The foot pedals on this unit have been upgraded from the previous model to provide more comfort during your workout. The stride length is fixed at 18″ which is comfortable for most users of average height and a maximum weight limit of 300 pounds.
- Compact design provides a smaller footprint
- A backlit LCD screen offers better readability of feedback on the console
- BioFit design provides a more comfortable, natural-feeling stride
- Additional features: water bottle holder, nice built-in fan, contact heart rate sensors, reading rack
- There is no adjustable incline
- No built-in speakers for MP3 player capability
It did fall flat a little in that it doesn’t offer an incline like some of the higher-end models. Although we found the resistance levels make up for that and with 19 programs total you’re certain not to get bored with your workout. Also, it lacks built-in speakers for an MP3 player or iPod as featured in most models, however this is not a major loss considering the poor quality of the speakers that most offer. There is a conveniently place accessory holder on the front of the console that is perfect for holding one which you can just use headphones with.
What Others Had to Say:
These are some reviews from actual users who shared their experience with this elliptical. Reviews have been paraphrased for your convenience.
“Sturdy, great for shorter stride, easy to assemble.”
“It feels like gym quality. It is quiet and gives a great workout.”
“Smooth mechanism. Value for money is reasonable.”
“I don’t think the pre-lubricated parts are lubricated enough.”
“Customer service is terrible.”
“Lack of a chest-strap compatibility.”
We read conflicting reviews regarding squeaking issues. While many said they found the machine to be very quiet in performance, others complained of squeaking after a few uses. Most of those who did encounter squeaking were able to resolve it by checking bolts and screws and applying the recommended lithium lubricant periodically. Another complaint that was made was the lack of capability for a chest strap. There are contact heart rate sensors on the stationary handlebars although if you prefer the chest strap piece, you may want to consider another model. There were also conflicting reviews regarding customer service where one said it was terrible, while many others were very satisfied.
It should be noted that it lacks the personal settings to input your data such as weight, height, and age as most higher-end models do. This isn’t a major deal-breaker as it simply serves to help you track your progress by saving your settings, although you may want to take into consideration the calories. The unit does feature calories burned, however this may not be completely accurate without knowing your personal data.
Our Thoughts on the Schwinn 431
We liked this elliptical most for its overall value. It has many features offered in a gym-quality elliptical but for a reasonable price. While most people found the 18″ stride to be perfect, a few did note that it was a little short for taller than average people. One feature that was nice was the smaller footprint of the machine. We would expect a smaller design to be less sturdy, although such was not the case with this elliptical. It was well noted by many that the stability the machine offers was impressive for its size even at higher speeds.
One of the aspects we really liked in this economy elliptical was the amount of programs it features. Most of your lower-end models and even some of your higher-end models only feature 10 or so preset programs. This one, however offers a nice range of options to choose from with 3 heart rate programs, manual mode, a custom mode and many others to suit your fitness goals. The backlit console was also found favorable for dim-lit areas like the basement or garage which is often where most people keep their fitness equipment.
Overall this made our recommendations based on our standards for a quality, durable machine that is at a reasonable price just a little more than our entry-level choice. Based on reviews on Schwinn 431 elliptical trainer from others and reports by consumer research we found this to be great machine with a really good value without some of the added bells and whistles or the price tag of higher-end models.
