Bowflex SelectTech 1090

Specifications

This is sold as a single dial-a-weight adjustable dumbbell that ranges in weights from 10 to 90 pounds. Plates can be adjusted in increments of 5 pounds for up to 17 different weight settings. These contain a chrome handle that is squared in design and is 17.5″ long. The dumbbell does not come with the stand but the base is included for holding additional weights not used when lifting up on the dumbbell.

Pros

One of the most desirable qualities we saw in this dumbbell is the versatility that it offers. Users can choose from a wide range of weight settings that are ideal for particular exercises. Another positive aspect is the dial-a-lock system that allows you to quickly switch between different weight amounts. The handle of the dumbbell connects to a dial on each end which you turn to select the desired amount of weight you need. The chrome textured handle is constructed with a squared design rather than round and ergonomic which is typical of most dumbbells.

Cons

One factor we consider when looking at adjustable dumbbells is their durability. This particular Bowflex dumbbell contains many moving parts within for adjusting the weights which does affect the overall quality as it isn’t as solid as  fixed weight dumbbells. One must take precaution when using these not to drop them so as to prevent damaging them.

Another drawback is that while these are efficient, you have to turn the dial on each end to adjust the weight which requires the use of both hands. It’s still much faster than manually removing the plates as with spin-locks, however we can see this as a minor nuisance to some. It should be noted as some of the images can be misleading that this dumbbell does NOT include the stand. If you’re going to be lifting 90-pounds of weight it is ideal to have them on a stand or at a reasonable height to reduce adding strain on your back when lifting.

What Others Have Said

To provide a more thorough review for our readers, we pulled some reviews others have written based on their personal experiences. Hear their thoughts about the Bowflex SelectTech 1090:

“It’s incredibly simple to change weights by a quick turn of the dial, but one note is that it can occasionally get stuck if you don’t adjust the dial just right, although this isn’t a big issue.”

“I did not find them cumbersome to use at all. In fact, I found little difference between using these and my 15 pound hex dumbbells despite the big difference in size.”

“Seem Sturdy: I’ve only had them a few months, but they seem well built, sturdy, and durable.”

“The handles have very pronounced textured grips on them, and if you are going to be doing any serious weight, you will likely need to use gloves because the strain it puts on your hand is higher than with a typical round textured handle”

“They are a bit bulky but that has not stopped me from being able to work out every part of my body.”

“The only drawback I’ve seen is that the bar is pretty long so you are using a large and long dumbbell even when you only need 10 lbs of weight. “

Our Conclusion

To summarize our thoughts, we find the Bowflex SelecTech 1090 adjustable dumbbell a decent buy. It will not stand up to being dropped due to their composition and should be handled accordingly to reduce risking damage, however with proper care these can be quite durable. The length of the dumbbells may compromise some workout exercises although with a little alternating they’ll do just fine. We have come to the conclusion that these would be suitable for their space-saving qualities by advance users in tight living quarters as the set can grow with you to accommodate your increasing strength.
